Rules / Registration
Boundaries: Artists must paint within the following boundaries: from Church Circle down Duke of Gloucester to St. Mary’s, across Green Street and down Main Street to City Dock area, and from State Circle down Maryland Ave to King George to City Dock and all streets in between. Eligibility: The Dueling Brushes competition is open to all artists- MAPAPA members and non-MAPAPA members. Juried Paint Annapolis 2008 artists and the seven founding artists participating in Paint Annapolis 2008 are eligible to participate in the Dueling Brushes event and are not required to register for the event.
Registration: You must register online by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19th. Your registration fee entitles you to enter your work in the outdoor exhibit/judging event after the timed competition. All entrants receive a Paint Annapolis 2008 hat.

Check-in: All entrants must pick up their hat and preprinted label for artist’s name, title of work, medium, price. This label is your proof of registration and must be attached to your work in order for it to be exhibited and judged. You can pick up your hat/label at the Paint Annapolis tent at next to the Market House at City Dock on Friday, Sept. 19th between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or after 8 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Set Up: Artists may set up their equipment and choose their sites Saturday morning before the competition officially begins at 9:00 a.m.
Begin: When the Dueling Brushes signal sounds at 9:00 a.m., artists begin to create en Plein Air. The artists must begin with nothing pre-painted, pre-drawn, and must create Dueling Brushes artwork only between 9:00 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Stop: At 11 a.m., the ending signal will sound. All artists must stop work on their artwork by 11:00 a.m. Any violators will be banned from future events.
Exhibit and Judging: At 11 a.m. all artists bring their completed artwork along with their easels to the designated exhibit/judging area at Susan Campbell Park at the tip of City Dock. Artists who want to participate in the open air art exhibit and judging must have their work set up in the exhibit/judging area by 11:15 a.m. Judging will begin promptly at 11:15 a.m. Any artwork not in place will be ineligible for awards.
Prizes: Winners will be announced at 12 noon with $1,000 in cash prizes divided among the 1st, 2nd, and 3d place winners. Artwork must be removed from the exhibit area after the awards ceremony. (Framing for finished artwork is optional is optional. However, if your artwork is selected for a 1st, 2nd, or 3d place prize and you wish to have it exhibited at Maryland Hall, you must deliver it framed and wired, ready for hanging to Maryland Hall between 10-10:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 21.
Sale of Artwork: Each Dueling Brushes artwork must be clearly marked with a label provided to registered entrants. The label must list the price of the artwork. All sales will be handled directly by the artists and payment details are solely the responsibility of the artist.
Commissions: Artists are strongly encouraged to donate 20 percent of sales to MAPAPA, so that the Dueling Brushes competition can be funded again next year.
