Paint Annapolis 2006 Maryland's First National Annual Plein Air Painting Event Celebrates its Fifth Year. September 21, 2006 marked the beginning of the 5th Annual Paint Annapolis event. This is the original Wet Paint Event and Exhibition in the Mid-Atlantic region that has been adopted by many other Maryland towns, including Easton and Havre de Grace. While all MAPAPA members were invited to participate in the many Paint Annapolis events, a select group of 25 artists had been juried into the competition, an event that spanned three days of painting (and nights if you were ambitious), and a grand reception and awards ceremony at the Chaney Gallery at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. Our tent at Market Square by City Dock served as our "headquarters", where artists and volunteers could hang out and information could be given to the public about the event. This year, several painters (including the show's Awards Juror, Stapleton Kearns) were painting at the tent, giving the public a live demonstration of plein air painting. We had great weather, and a great time was had by all. Members of MAPAPA were invited to show work at City Hall, and that work will hang there through October 29, 2006. This year, a special feature of the event was the inclusion of area high school students, including their own exhibition in the hallways of Maryland Hall, showing concurrently with the juried artists in Chaney Gallery. It's exciting (and a little scarey!) to see the up and coming talent in the local school district. We look forward to their continued involvement in future exhibitions with MAPAPA. Ray Ellis RAY ELLIS has been painting for over fifty years. He has painted on all seven continents. In the spring of 2004, the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia honored the depth and breadth of Ellis' career with a major traveling exhibition titled, "Ray Ellis: A Painter's Journey." Ellis was born in Philadelphia and attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. His first one-man show was held in 1947 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After serving four years in the coast guard during WWII, he founded his own advertising agency in New Jersey and New York, but continued to paint in his spare time. During this period he was elected to the American Watercolor Society, and his works were widely exhibited and received numerous honors. In 1969, Ellis was able to devote all his time to painting. In 1974 he moved south to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and then to Savannah, Georgia. Only recently has he resettled in the north where he maintains a home and studio on Martha's Vineyard. In the early 80's, Ray Ellis and Walter Cronkite collaborated on a series of fine art books which celebrate America's coastlines: "South by Southeast", "North by Northeast", and "Westwind". In 1992, Ellis authored "The Spirit of Golf" with golf journalist Ben Wright and in 1997, "The Road to Ballybunnion" with John DeGarmo. Paintings of Savannah and Martha's Vineyard have been published in separate volumes: "Ray Ellis' Savannah & the Lowcountry" and "Martha's Vineyard, An Affectionate Memoir". "Coastal Images of America", published in 1998, include many paintings from the out-of-print Ellis/Cronkite books and new text by Dr. Robert Ballard. In 2000, "Fishing the Vineyard" was published. All the paintings commissioned by the Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby are included along with stories by Vineyard fishermen. The most recent book, "Lowcountry", features new paintings of the Georgia and South Carolina coast. For three consecutive years beginning in 1998, Ellis was commissioned by the President to paint scenes of the White House to be produced as their Christmas card. His works have been exhibited in the U.S. Embassies in Geneva, Vienna, and London. Ray Ellis' paintings are in the permanent collections of the White House, museums across the country, and private collections worldwide. Announcing Paint Annapolis Awards Judge Stapleton Kearns STAPLETON KEARNS has participated in over twenty-five one man or small group exhibitions during the past ten years. He has twice shown in the biannual show of the National Academy of Design in New York City. The American Embassy in Moscow displayed one of his large snow scenes as an example of American painting in the Arts for the Embassies Program. He is a member of the Guild of Boston Artists and has served for five years as the President of the Rockport Art Association. In 1974 he was one of the few students the representational painter R.H. Ives Gammell agreed to teach during the latter years of his sixty-five year long career.
