About the Event
Paint Annapolis 2008 is a juried competition produced by the Mid-Atlantic Plein-Air Painters Association (MAPAPA) with support from Maryland Hall, the City of Annapolis, and our sponsors. The competition is a city-wide event which in 2008 will include other fine art exhibitions, lectures and demonstrations. Twenty-three (23) artists will be selected by the juror to compete alongside the seven (7) original MAPAPA founding artist members. In addition, the juror will select 5 alternates in the event that some of the selected artists or founders cannot participate.

Paint Annapolis 2008 will run from September 17 to September 21, 2008. Artist should arrive on Wednesday evening, and the event will conclude on Sunday evening with the collector’s preview, reception, and awards. Competing artists must paint within designated boundaries (TBA) on all three painting days -- Thurs., Sept. 18, Fri., Sept. 19, and Sat., Sept. 20. Artists must submit two (2) completed, framed, and ready to hang works of art on the morning of Sun. Sept. 21. Artwork must be created during the event painting days, “en plein-air,” without the assistance of photographs, and within the painting boundaries. Artwork submissions may not exceed a framed size limit of 36”x42.”

The sale and exhibition will be held at Maryland Hall in their two gallery spaces, and work (sold and unsold) must remain on display until the end of the exhibition which is Oct 26, 2008. Artists must pick up unsold work at the end of the exhibition, or make their own arrangements for shipping work back home.

To Enter
Artists wishing to be juried for the event should submit three slides or three digital images (all entries must be the same type, e.g., no combination digital and slide entries) of their original plein-air work, completed in the past two (2) years, along with the MAPAPA Paint Annapolis 2008 entry form. The form should list the artist’s personal information, details about the work being submitted to the juror, and a $20.00 entry fee. Make checks payable to MAPAPA.

MAPAPA membership is required to enter the competition. Membership is $35.00 annually—see the membership section of the MAPAPA website for a membership application. Slides must be clearly labeled with artist’s name, title, media and size of artwork. Digital images should be downloaded on a single disk (no larger than 700 pixels; image resolution should be 72 ppi, pixels per inch, not DPI, and saved as an 8 bit jpg file; compression should be 12). Disk should be labeled with the artist’s name, and entries should be loaded in same order as listed on the entry form. If selected by the juror, artists will be asked to pay a $25.00 hanging fee.

About The Judge

Mr. Karnes received his BFA in painting from Philadelphia College of Art and his MFA in painting from Yale University. Mr. Karnes’ awards have included the most prestigious in the United States.
